Asthma Chronic inflammation and narrowing of the airways.
Punctured Lung Air in the chest cavity causing the lung to collapse.
Pulmonary Fibrosis Scarring and stiffening of lung tissue.
Pulmonary Edema Fluid buildup in the lungs.
Hyperventilate Breathing too fast or too deeply.
Diffusion Movement of gases between alveoli and blood.
Inspiration Breathing air into the lungs.
Expiration Breathing air out of the lungs.
Respiratory Rate Number of breaths per minute.
Pulse Oximetry Test measuring blood oxygen level.
Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) Fastest air blown out after a deep breath.
Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) Measurement of how fast air is exhaled.
Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) Air exhaled forcefully in one second.
Bronchodilator Drug that opens the airways.
Upper Respiratory Tract Airways from the nose to the larynx.
Larynx Voice box connecting pharynx to trachea.
Pharynx Throat; passage for air and food.
Nasal Cavity Space inside the nose that filters and warms air.
Lower Respiratory Tract Airways from trachea to lungs.
Bronchi Main airways branching from the trachea to the lungs.
Bronchioles Small branches of the bronchi.
Alveoli Tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs.
Trachea Windpipe carrying air to the bronchi.
Lungs Organs that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Right Superior Lobe Upper section of the right lung.
Right Medial Lobe Middle section of the right lung.
Right Inferior Lobe Lower section of the right lung.
Left Superior Lobe Upper section of the left lung.
Left Inferior Lobe Lower section of the left lung.
Horizontal Fissure Divides the right upper and middle lobes.
Oblique Fissure Divides upper and lower lobes of lungs.
Diaphragm Muscle that helps lungs expand and contract.
Cartilaginous Rings Cartilage rings keeping the trachea open.
Epiglottis Flap preventing food from entering the trachea.
Respiratory Zone Area where gas exchange occurs.
Conducting Zone Airways that move air but do not exchange gases.
