| αὐτὰρ κήρυκα πρόεσαν δόμον εἰς Ὀδυσῆος, ἀγγελίην ἐρέοντα περίφρονι Πηνελοπείῃ, | But they sent a herald to the house of Odysseus, to tell the news to wise Penelope, |
| οὕνεκα Τηλέμαχος μὲν ἐπ᾽ ἀγροῦ, νῆα δ᾽ ἀνώγει ἄστυδ᾽ ἀποπλείειν, ἵνα μὴ δείσασ᾽ ἐνὶ θυμῷ ἰφθίμη βασίλεια τέρεν κατὰ δάκρυον εἴβοι | That Telemachus was in the countryside, and he ordered the ship to sail away towards the city, lest the strong queen fear in her heart and drop a delicate tear. |
| And the herlad and the divine swineheard met on account of the same news, to tell the woman. |
| And then indeed they arrived in at the home of the divine king, and the herland spoke in the midddle of the maids: "Now indeed, queen, your dear son has arrived." |
| And the swineheard, standing near, said to Penelope as many thing as her dear son had ordered him to tell. |
| But when indeed he spoke away all the commands, he went to go among the swine, and he left both the courtyard and the palace. |
| μνηστῆρες δ᾽ ἀκάχοντο κατήφησάν τ᾽ ἐνὶ θυμῷ, ἐκ δ᾽ ἦλθον μεγάροιο παρὲκ μέγα τειχίον αὐλῆς, | But the suitors were dismayed and downcast in their hearts, and they went out of the palace beyond the great wall of the court, |
τοῖσιν δ᾽ Εὐρύμαχος, Πολύβου πάϊς, ἦρχ᾽ ἀγορεύειν: | And there in front of the doors they sat. And Eurymachus, son of Polybus, began to speak among them: |
| "O' friends, in truth a great deed has been accomplished incidentally by Telemachus on this journey: and we said it would not be accomplished by him. |
| But come, let us launch a black ship, the one which is the best, and let us gather rowers, seamen, as soon as possible so that they might tell those men to return homewards swiftly. |
