agriculture The practice of farming plants and domesticating animals to create food and other resources.
civilization A complex form of social organization involving governments, culture, and social hierarchies.
Neolithic Revolution (ca. 8000 BCE) The change from hunting and gathering to farming and herding that enabled much larger human populations and the development of urban centers
social stratification A system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy; the division of large numbers of people into layers according to their relative property, power, and prestige
diffusion The spread of cultural behaviors and traits (such as ideas, music, food, religion, technology, and language) either within a single culture or from one culture to another
domestication The process by which animals or plants are bred in order to select genetic traits that are useful to humans
Fertile Crescent A region centered in present-day Iraq, Syria, Israel, and Egypt where many early civilizations began
hunting and gathering culture A culture that gets food primarily by hunting and finding it from the environment instead of by farming or herding
job specilization The process by which a division of labor occurs as different workers specialize i different tasks or jobs over time
nomadic Moving from one place to another rather than living in a permanent settlement, village, or city
migration The movement of people from one location or country to another
Paleolithic (2,500,000-10,000 BCE) An early period of human history in which humans used simple stone tools. This period is also called the Old Stone Age
pastoralism The practice of herding animals for food and materials to sustain a society
