Diffusion Movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between lungs and blood.
Inspiration Breathing air into the lungs.
Expiration Breathing air out of the lungs.
Respiratory Rate Number of breaths taken per minute.
Pulse Oximetry Test that measures oxygen in the blood.
Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF Fastest speed air can be blown out of the lungs.
Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) Measurement of how fast someone can exhale.
Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) Amount of air forced out in one second.
Bronchodilator Medicine that relaxes and opens airways.
Upper Respiratory Tract Airways above the lungs (nose, throat, etc.).
Larynx Voice box that helps with breathing and speaking.
Pharynx Throat that connects nose and mouth to lungs.
Nasal cavity Space inside the nose where air enters.
Lower Respiratory Tract Airways that lead into the lungs.
Bronchi Two large tubes that carry air into the lungs.
Bronchioles Smaller tubes inside the lungs that carry air.
Alveoli Tiny air sacs where gas exchange happens.
Trachea Windpipe that carries air to the bronchi.
Lungs Organs that bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide.
Right Superior Lobe (Right Upper) Top section of the right lung.
Right Medial Lobe (Right Middle) Middle section of the right lung.
Right Inferior Lobe (Right Lower) Bottom section of the right lung.
Left Superior Lobe (Left Upper) Top section of the left lung.
Left Inferior Lobe (Left Lower) Bottom section of the left lung.
Horizontal Fissure Line that separates lobes in the right lung.
Oblique Fissure Line that separates lung lobes at an angle.
Diaphragm Muscle under the lungs that helps breathing.
Cartilaginous rings Rings in the trachea that keep it open.
Epiglottis Flap that stops food from going into the airway.
Respiratory zone Area where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
Conducting zone Airways that move air to the lungs.
