What is genetics? The study of heredity
What is heredity? The transfer of traits from one generation to another generation
Who is Gregor Mendel? known as the father of modern genetics, a monk in Austria, discovered the basic principles of heredity through experiments with pea plants
Inherited traits a characteristic or features of one organism that are inherited (passed from parent to offspring)
Genotype the genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype the appearance of an organism based on its genotype plus environmental factors (physical traits/appearance)
Allele form of a gene
Dominant Allele the form of the gene that masks or overpowers the other form (capital letter)
Recessive Allele the form of the gene that gets masked by the dominant allele (lowercase letters)
