What two rocks can be porphyritic (but are not always)? Rhyolite and Basalt
Which rock is always porphyritic? Andesite
Which rock has pink grains? Rhyolite
Which rock has black grains? Andesite
Which rock has green grains? Basalt
Gabbro rocks are typically 100% black, what other colors can they have? Pink or Red
Granite is what color? Light Mostly white with black spots still mafic

Where are mafic rocks formed? Mantle
Where are felsic rocks formed? Crust
Rock salt is? Super crystaly

Abundant grains will look similar to? Gravel
Sandstone will look and feel like? Sand Sandpaper
Mudstone and Shale should not be on this test, but in case, what is the difference between the two? Mudstone can scratch glass, shale can't Shale is thinly layered, easily spread into sheets
What does chert look like and what can it do? Like shale, but more like toffee Can scratch glass
What does foliated mean? Layered
Gneiss has? Stripes White-dark Similar to granite
Non-foliated means? No layers, not banded
Schist is? Never sparkly, but looks metallic/shiny Hard to see layers
Schist can look like? Garnets (red)
Slate looks like? Shale, but with more layers and less dull
Phyllites can have? Ridges, scales
Phyllites look? Waxy/silky Shine
Quartzite can? Scratch glass
Can marble scratch glass? No, it is too weak
Amphibolites look? Black, sparkly Rectangular, coarse grains
What are low metamorphic grade rocks? Marble, quartzite, slate, and green stone
