What is a comma splice? Using only a comma to join two independent clauses
What are the seven coordinating conjunctions? For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So
What are the pronouns that appear at the beginning of adjective clauses and have a connective or relating function called? Relative Pronouns
What is a restrictive clause? No commas, essential to the understanding of the sentence, identifies the noun
What is a nonrestrictive clause? Commas, not essential to the understanding of the sentence, not needed to identify noun
What is a simple sentence? 1 independent clause, 0 dependent clauses
What is a compound sentence? 2 independent clauses, 0 dependent clauses Conjunctions or semicolons
What is a complex sentence? 1 independent clauses, 1+ dependent clauses
What is a compound-complex sentence? 2+ independent clauses, 1+ dependent clauses
What are the three verbals? Gerunds, infinitives, and participials
What is a gerund? -ing, noun
What is an infinitive? to + verb
What is a participial? -ing, adjective
What is an absolute? noun + participial Sometimes begins with "with"
What do adverb clauses have? Subordinating conjunctions (like "although") Moveable
What do adjective clauses have? Relative pronouns
What relative pronouns do adjective clauses have? Who, whom, whose, which, that Time WHEN, place WHERE
What do noun clauses start with? That, wh- words, how, if
What can you use to test if it is a noun clause? "something" or "someone"
What is an appositive? Noun clause Renames (or describes) the noun it usually follows
To be a complete sentence, a sentence must? 1. Contain a subject and verb 2. Stand alone (complete thought)
What are the exceptions to fragments? Commands, exclamations, dialogue, occasional transitions (on with the story, etc)
