| decomposer | a living thing that breaks down dead plants and animals |

| food chain | a simple model that shows how energy moves from the sun to producers and then to consumers along a single pathway |
| food web | a system of food chains showing different ways energy moves through an ecosystem |
| herbivore | a consumer that eats only plants |
| omnivore | a consumer that eats both plants and animals |
| organism | any living thing such as a plant, animal, fungus or bacteria |
| predator | an animal that hunts and eats other animals |
| prey | an animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal |
| producer | an organism that makes its own energy |
| sun | the main source of energy for organisms |
