TermDefinition
Correct order for lymphocyte circulation bone marrow & thymus, venous blood, arterial blood, lymphoid tissue, peripheral tissue, capillary network, lymph vessel, lymph node
What are 3 examples of antigens Bacteria, viruses, fungi
What are the types of acquired immunity Humoral and Cellular
How do antigens initiate the immune response They act as foreign markers that bind to specific receptors on B and T lymphocytes
What is the major role of macrophages Engulfs and digest foreign particles and do antigen presentation
What does a plasma cell do Produces lots of immunoglobulin and cranks out antibodies to identify antigens
What is immunoglobulin and what does it do A Y shaped glycoprotein produced by plasma cells that recognizes foreign substances, activates complement, and binds to and neutralizes antigens like bacteria and viruses
What is complement Group of blood born proteins activated after binding to antibody covered antigens. When activated, causes lysis of the microorganisms and enhances inflammatory response
Lymphokines Chemicals released by sensitized T cells
Monokines Chemicals released by activated macrophages
Allergic reaction Peanut proteins enter body and bind to IgE antibodies on mast cells. Mast cells release Histamine, causing allergic reactions to the skin, nose, lungs, Digestive System, and blood vessels. Could go into anaphylactic shock
Anaphylactic Shock Systemic (Body wide) acute allergic response
Congenital immunodeficiency illness SCID. The person is born with the condition- caused by genetic defects. Symptoms appear in infancy or early childhood
Acquired immunodeficiency illness AIDS. The condition develops later in life. Immune system was normal at birth but was weakened form infections, diseases, malnutrition, medical treatments, etc.
Examples of autoimmune diseases Grave's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis
What goes wrong in autoimmune diseases The immune system doesn't tolerate self antigens, but still recognizes and attacks foreigns. So the body produces antibodies and sensitized T cells that attack and damage its own tissues
Where are the three main lymph nodes Axillary, Cervical, Inguinal
What are the three main points about the specific body defenses It's systemic, it's antigen specific, it has memory
Primary Organs where lymphocytes are made and trained
Secondary organs where trained lymphocytes gather and respond to infection

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
