Science Test March 3

QuestionAnswer
What is a wave? A disturbance that carries Energy as it travels.
What type of wave does not require a medium? Electromagnetic waves
Longitudinal wave travel in the same direction as the vibrations that produce it side to side like a slinky (parallel).
Transverse wave waves that move in a perpendicular direction (up and down). *Both are mechanical waves that require a medium
What is wave frequency? The number of waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time.
Reflection When waves bounce off a surface. Ex: mirror, echo
Refraction When waves bend due to changing speed (going from medium to another, like air to water) ex: looking at a pencil in water
Diffraction Waves bending around a barrier ex:hearing someone talking from another room
Transmission when waves pass through a surface ex: hearing a knock on your door
Absorption when the energy of a wave transfers to the materials it comes into contact with (ex: wearing a dark shirt on a sunny day)
What is a “medium”? Substance through which a wave can travel.
What type of materials and colors reflect light waves? Shiny, metals, mirrors, light colors
Frequency (units) Hertz
Wavelength (units) Meters
Velocity (units) Meters per Second
If waves don’t transfer matter, what do they transfer? ENERGY
Explain what a light wave is. Does it require a medium? An electromagnetic wave. Does NOT require medium.
Explain what a sound wave is. Does it require a medium? A mechanical wave. DOES require a medium
What happens to sound if the amplitude of the wave is increased? The volume of the sound increases.
Do light waves or sound waves travel faster? What is an example of this? Light waves- thunder and lightning.
Describe the Doppler Effect. Give an example. The change in frequency and pitch of the sound wave caused by motion. An ambulance driving past you- sounds louder when it’s right in front of you compared to when it drives past you.
What causes sound waves? Vibrations
What type of signal is continuous? Analog
What type of signal is more reliable to store and share information? Why? Digital signals. They are less likely to be distorted by noise/interference.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum? The entire range of electromagnetic waves from low frequency to high.
List the 7 electromagnetic waves in order of increasing frequency. Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible light, Ultraviolet, x-rays, Gamma.
Name one type of wave on the spectrum with a longer wavelength than infrared waves. Microwaves or radio waves.
Which type of wave allows you to see bone? X-rays.
Which type of wave allows you to see colors? Visible light.
Which type of wave can cause skin cancer? Ultraviolet.
What happens to the wavelength as the frequency increases? It decreases
What color of visible light has the shortest wavelength? Violet
