uniformitarianism The idea that the same natural processes happening today (like erosion and earthquakes) also happened in the past.
fossil The preserved remains or traces of a living thing from long ago.
trace fossil A fossil that shows the activity of an organism, like footprints, burrows, or tracks.
climate The average weather conditions of a place over a long period of time.
ice core A long cylinder of ice taken from glaciers that scientists study to learn about Earth’s past climate.
relative dating A way to determine which rock or fossil is older or younger compared to others.
superposition The principle that in undisturbed rock layers, the oldest layer is at the bottom and the youngest is at the top.
unconformity A gap in the geologic record where rock layers are missing due to erosion or not being formed.
geologic column A chart that shows the sequence of rock layers and their relative ages.
absolute dating A method used to find the exact age of a rock or fossil.
radioactive decay The process by which unstable atoms break down into more stable atoms over time.
half-life The amount of time it takes for half of a radioactive substance to decay.
radiometric dating A way to determine the age of rocks and fossils by measuring radioactive decay.
