Meiosis Review
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is meiosis? | The process of making sex cells- egg and sperm. Cutting the # of chromosomes in half to 23 chromosomes in humans |
| Gametes are what types of cells? How many sets of chromosomes do gametes have? | Sex cells. They have 1 set of chromosomes (haploid, n) |
| Are gametes haploid or diploid cells? | Haploid. Haploid = n; Diploid = 2n |
| If an organism’s diploid number is 24, its haploid number is... | 12 |
| What is crossing over? | When non-sister chromatids exchange genetic information (happens in Prophase I). When non-sister chromatids wrap around each other which exchanged that genetic info and it leads to genetic diversity within cells/generic variations between cells. |
| What are tetrads? When do they form? | 2 homologous chromosomes next to each other or 4 chromatids. They form in Prophase (XX) |
| At the end of meiosis, how many cells are formed? Are they genetically different or identical? | 4 cells are formed. They are genetically different. |
| Define the principal of independent assortment | During Metaphase I, tetrads line up in the middle at random. Independent assortment states that all genes are inherited independently of each other. Genes do NOT depend on other genes. |
| If you are a boy, your chromosomes pair is _____. If you are a girl, your chromosome pair is _____. | XY & XX |
