What is the Whiskey Rebellion? A tax on liquor led to the whiskey rebellion which was quickly put down by George Washington/the militia
What is a precedent? acts or decisions that serve as examples for others to follow
What is the Cabinet? group of officials who advise the president
What is National Debt? Alexander Hamilton developed a plan to repay the total sum of money the national government owes
What is a tariff? Hamilton called for a tax that makes imported goods more expensive than goods produced within a country
What is a bond? a government borrows money by using certificates that promise to repay money loaned plus interest on a certain date
What is the Judiciary Act? passed in 1789, it organized the federal court system
Who was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? John Jay
Hamilton set aside land for a new capital city called____ District of Columbia
What is the Bank of the United States? set up in 1791, issued paper money and made loans to farmers and businesses
What is the French Revolution? an uprising that began when the French people stormed the Bastille
What is the Neutrality Proclamation? a document stating that the US would not support either side in the war in Europe
What is Jay's Treaty? an agreement between the US and Britain regarding American ships seized in 1793
What is the Farewell Address? speech in which Washington urged the US to remain neutral in its relations with foreign countries, and to avoid political parties and alliances
Who is in the First Cabinet? Secretary of State- Jefferson Secretary of Treasury - Hamilton Secretary of War - Henry Knox Attorney General - Edmund Randolph
What were the two political parties? Federalists and Democratic-Republicans
Who led the Federalists and what did they believe? Hamilton, favored a strong federal government, pro-British, believed rich and educated should lead, for loose interpretation of the Constitution
Who led the Democratic-Republicans and what did they believe? Jefferson, pro-French, believed ordinary people should have power, for strict interpretation of the Constitution, wanted strong state governments
