“Revolution of 1800” The election where Thomas Jefferson became president, marking the first peaceful transfer of power between political parties.
Judiciary Act, 1801 A law that created new federal judge jobs right before Jefferson became president.
“midnight judges” The judges President John Adams appointed at the last minute before leaving office.
Marbury v. Madison A Supreme Court case that gave courts the power to declare laws unconstitutional.
judicial review The Supreme Court’s power to decide if a law goes against the Constitution.
Tripolitan War A war between the U.S. and pirates from North Africa over attacks on American ships.
Haitian Revolution A successful slave revolt in Haiti that led to independence from France.
Louisiana Purchase The U.S. bought a huge amount of land from France in 1803, doubling its size.
Lewis and Clark (Corps of Discovery) Explorers sent by Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Territory.
Sacagawea Sacagawea was a Native American guide who helped them.
Aaron Burr Vice President who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel and was later accused of treason.
Impressment When Britain forced American sailors to serve in the British navy.
Chesapeake affair When a British ship attacked a U.S. ship (USS Chesapeake) in 1807.
Embargo Act A law passed by Jefferson that stopped all American trade with foreign countries to avoid war.
Non-Intercourse Act Reopened trade with all nations except Britain and France.
“War Hawks” Young members of Congress who wanted war with Britain.
Tecumseh and the Prophet Tecumseh’s brother who encouraged Native Americans to resist American influence.
Battle of Tippiecanoe A battle where U.S. forces defeated Native Americans led by Tecumseh’s brother.
War of 1812 A war between the U.S. and Britain caused by impressment and trade issues.
Treaty of Ghent The 1814 treaty that ended the War of 1812.
Battle of New Orleans A major U.S. victory after the treaty was signed, led by Andrew Jackson.
Hartford Convention A meeting where New England Federalists discussed their complaints about the War of 1812.
