| flashback | when a story goes back in time |
| context clues | clues in the text that help the reader determine the meaning of a word |
| stage directions | instructions for actors |
| fiction | literally work that is not real. It is usually made up |
| onomatopoeia | words that represent sounds |
| narrator | speaker or the person who is telling the story |
| hyperbole | an exaggeration |
| climax | the turning point of the story |
| expository | text that informs, gives instructions and is nonfiction |
| main idea | the central idea of events of a story |
| conflict | the problem of the story |
| dialogue | a conversation betwenn two people |
| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things without using "like" or "as" |
| plot | a piece of what its mainly about |
| setting | when and where the story takes place |
| suffix | a word part that can be added to the end of a word to make a new word |
| foreshadow | clues that indicate something will happen later on in the story or future |
| text features | parts of a text that stand out (diagram, table of contents, ect.) |
| authors purpose | the reason a story is written- to persuade, inform, entertainor explain |
| point of view | the perspective of which the story is told |
| stanza | the "paragraph" in the poem |
| resolution | the solution to a problem or final outcome of a story |
| personafication | giving human qualities to non-human things |
| drama | the sequence of events in a story |
| simile | comparing two things using "like" or "as" |
| autobiography | the story of a person's life written by that person |
| playwright | person who wrote play/drama |
| prefix | a word part that can be added at the beginnig to make a new word |
| first person point of view | story of from the point of view of one character using "I" and "we" |
| nonfiction | writing that is factual, true NOT made up or fictional. |
