Ion An atom that has a positive or negative charge.
Ionic Bond Formed when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another
Covalent Bond a bond formed when atoms SHARE one or more pairs of electrons
Elements in ionic bonds metals and nonmetals
elements in a covalent bond Nonmetal and nonmetal
stable atoms have full valence shells
Reactants A starting material in a chemical reaction (left side of arrow)
Products The elements or compounds produced by a chemical reaction. (Right side of arrow)
Exothermic reaction A reaction that releases energy in the form of heat.
Endothermic reaction A reaction in which energy is absorbed
Fusion Creation of energy by joining the nuclei of two atoms to form a larger atom.
Fission A nuclear reaction in which a massive nucleus splits into smaller nuclei
Chemical change A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
Physical change A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
Nuclear change change in the nuclei of its atoms
Radioactivity The release of radiation by an unstable atomic nucleus
Acid A solution that has an excess of H+ ions. pH of less than 7
Base A solution that has an excess of OH- ions. pH great than 7
Neutralization A reaction between an acid and a base creating a more neutral solution. Byproducts of water, salt and heat.
Cation A positively charged ion
Anion A negatively charged ion
Indicator A dye infused paper/liquid that changes color in the presence of an acid or base
