Brown v. Board of Education Supreme court case that ended but equal and required desegregation of public schools
1956 Georgia State Flag Controversial flag that flew over Georgia from 1956-2001; controversial because it had the confederate battle emblem on it.
Sibley Commission Group that investigated what should be done about integration in the state; recommended that public schools desegregate on a limited basis.
Martin Luther king, Jr. Important civil rights leader who believed in nonviolent protests; first president of SCLC and winner of the Nobel peace prize
John Lewis Leader in the civil rights movement and SNCC; spoke at the March on washington and led the march in Selma, Alabama.
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) Created as a civil rights organization for young people in the South; known for sit-ins at lunch counters in the south
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Created in 1957 to coordinate non-violent protests of segregation and discrimination; Martin Luther King, Jr. was the first president of SCLC
March on Washington Famous civil rights march where Marin Luther King jr. delivered his “ I have a dream” speech; also encouraged the civil rights act of 1964 to pass
Albany Movement An organized civil rights protest with a goal to desegregate the whole city of Albany
Civil Rights Act of 1964 Required equal treatment of all people; Lester Maddox was openly against this act
