| stage directions | instructions for actors |
| fiction | literary work that is not real. It is usually made up |
| onomatopoeia | words that represent sounds |
| narrator | speaker or the person who is telling the story |
| hyperbole | a comparison of two unlike things without using like or as |
| climax | the turning point of the story |
| expository | parts of text that stand out |
| main idea | the central idea or message of the story |
| conflict | the problem in the story |
| dialogue | a brief statement of main events in a story |
| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things without using like or as |
| plot | the sequences of events in a story |
| setting | where and when a story takes place |
| suffix | a word or part that can be added to the end of a word to create a new one |
| foreshadow | clues that indicate something will happen later on in the story or the future |
| text features | parts of a text that stand out |
| authors purpose | the reason a story is written-to persuade, inform, entertain or explain |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story is told |
| stanza | The "paragraph" in a poem |
| resolution | the solution to a problem or final outcome of a story |
| personification | giving human qualities to non-living things |
| drama | a story written to be performed by actors; a play |
