QuestionAnswer
What is ecology? the study of the interactions between living organisms and their enviroment
5 levels ecological organization, ecoystem is Collection of organisims living and non living in a system together
5 levels ecological, Population All members of a single species living in the same area
5 levels ecological, Biosphere All the organisms and the parts of earth that host life.
5 levels ecological, Individual Simplest form of an organism
5 levels ecological, Community All living organisims in one area
What is population a group of organisms living in the same area at the same time
What 2 things will cause a population to grow immigration and births
What 2 things cause a population to shrink emigration and deaths
What happens to growth rates if the birth rate is higher than death rate lower Population increase
What happens to growth rates if the birth rate is lower than death rate is higher Population decrease
What happens to the growth rate if the birth rate is equal to the death rate Stable no growth or decline
What is an Age-Structure diagram? Shows reliative number of organisms of each age group within population male/female age population size
What does the age-structure diagram show number or percent of individuals in each age group
What are the 3 types of dispersion? Clumped, Random, Uniform
What does clumped dispersion look like? all together near a resource
What does Random dispersion look like? No pattern, spreadout
What does Uniform dispersion look like? evenly spaced
What is an abotic factor Non-living in an ecosystem. Example: Temp, water, air, sunlight, rocks, soil
What is an botic factor Parts of the ecosyatem that are alive or have been alive. Plants, animals, bacteria
What is a survivorship curve? Shows the likelihood of death or survival at any time during the life cycle with age
Describe exponential growth population that is increasing at a constant rate, indefinately
Exponential growth occurs under what conditions resources are plentiful, conditions are ideal, perfect
What shape is exponential growth on a chart J-Shaped
What is carring capacity Population size that can be supported over a long period of time
What happens when a population is over carring capacity overshot, limited resources, death rates rise, competition rises
Describe logistic growth Period of exponential groiwth, population slows or stops growing
Logistic growth occurs when When population reaches carring capacity \, and runs out of resources
What is the shape of logistic growth on a graph S-Shaped
Can a population continue to grow expontially No
Can a population continue to grow expontially why not Resources will become scarce
What are liminting factors in a population Factors causiing population to slow or stop
Exapmples of limiting factors are lack of food, water, shelter, and natural disaster
What is density-dependent Depends on size, food and space
What is density-independent Effects everyone, Volcanic eruptions, natural disaters

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
