| onomatopoeia | the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named |
| narrator | a character who recounts the events of a novel or narrative poem. |
| hyperbole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally |
| climax | the most intense, exciting, or important point of something |
| expository | intended to explain or describe something. |
| main idea | the primary, most important point or message an author wants to convey |
| conflict | a serious disagreement or argument |
| dialogue | a conversation between two or more people, commonly used in literature, film, and theater |
| metaphor | a figure of speech that directly equates two unrelated things without using "like" or "as" |
| plot | the structured sequence of events in a story |
| setting | The physical, immediate surroundings like a room, house, or street, as well as the broader region |
| suffix | a word added at the end of another word to form a derivative |
| foreshadow | a literary and dramatic device where an author drops subtle hints, warnings |
| text features | non-narrative elements in texts—primarily nonfiction—that help readers locate information quickly |
| author's purpose | what the author intends for the book/play, or movie |
| point of view | the perspective, attitude, or vantage point from which a story is narrated or events are observed |
| stanza | a group of lines forming the basic recurring metrical unit in a poem |
| resolution | the conclusion of the story |
| personification | a literary device that attributes human emotions, actions, or characteristics to inanimate objects |
| drama | another word for a play |
| simile | a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind |
| autobiography | an account of a person's life written by that person. |
| playwright | a literary profession and a modern software automation tool |
| theme | the central, underlying idea, message, or universal truth explored throughout a work of literature, art, or film |
| prefix | a word, letter, or number placed before another. |
| 1st person point of view | storytelling technique where the narrator is a character within the story using terms like me, I, and we. |
| drawing conclusion | he process of using implied or explicit information, facts, and personal knowledge |
| nonfiction | literature based on facts, real events, and people |
| summary | a concise, objective restatement of a text's main points and key supporting details in your own words |
