FS Lecture 3

QuestionAnswer
What is the primary purpose of leveling in surveying? To determine and establish points of elevation and differences in elevation.
Term: Benchmark (BM) Definition: A relatively permanent point of known elevation used as a starting point or reference.
In differential leveling, what is a Backsight (BS)? A rod reading taken on a point of known elevation to determine the height of the instrument.
Concept: Height of Instrument (HI) Definition: The elevation of the line of sight of the surveying instrument.
In differential leveling, what is a Foresight (FS)? A rod reading taken on a point where a new elevation needs to be determined.
What is the function of a Turning Point (TP)? A temporary point used to establish a reference elevation so the instrument can be moved to a new location.
What is the mathematical formula for calculating the Height of Instrument (HI)? HI = Elevation + BS (Backsight)
How is the elevation of a new point calculated from the Height of Instrument (HI)? Elevation = HI - FS (Foresight)
To maintain accuracy in differential leveling, how should backsight and foresight distances relate? They should be kept nearly equal.
How is the arithmetic 'error check' performed for a set of level notes? Determine if ∑ BS - ∑ FS equals the difference between the final and initial elevations.
What is a 'level circuit' closure? Carrying a line of levels back to the original benchmark or another benchmark of known elevation.
What is the primary objective of profile leveling? To determine the elevations of points at known distances along a specific line.
Term: Intermediate Foresight (IFS) Definition: A rod reading taken on a station that is not a benchmark or a turning point.
In profile leveling notes, what must be done every time the instrument is moved? Take a backsight (BS) to reestablish the Height of Instrument (HI).
What does a vertical section through the earth's surface represent when plotted? A profile.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
