| censorship | the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, because they are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security |
| petition | request to do something, most commonly addressed to a government official or public enemy |
| slander | the action or crime of making a false spoke statement damaging to a persons reputation |
| libel | published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation |
| bicameral | two houses in Congress; (House of Representatives and Senate) |
| Congress | 535 members elected officials that are part of the Senate and House of Representatives; Make and decide laws |
| House of Representatives | Large body of Congress 435 voting members based on census(population); two year terms |
| Senate | Represent individual states (2 per state) serve 6 year terms |
| census | 10 year population count to adjust the number of representatives given to each state |
| constituents | voting people represented by the house and senate of their state |
| gerrymander | oddly shaped district organized to increase voting strength of a particular group |
| standing committees | permanent committees that deal with issues in Congress including agriculture, commerce, an veterans affairs |
| Speaker of the House | Leader of the House (majority party selects) |
| Congressional Districts | People elected to represent districts within each state |
| expressed powers | Powers specifically given to the federal government(Congress) |
| implied powers | Powers not explicitly listed in the constitution but are necessary for the government to do their job |
| impeach | The House can accuse a person of misuse of conduct; Senate can hold trial and formally impeach with 2/3 vote |
| franking privilege | Senators and house members receive free parking, office spaces, trips within their home state, free postage, and low cost insurance |
| lobbyist | People hired by private companies, etc., to influence government decisions |
| Pork Barrel Projects | Government projects or grants that benefit home states of members of Congress "pulling the fat" out of the funds |
| bill | Draft of a proposed law presented to Congress |
| filibuster | talk a bill to "death" so it doesn't pass |
| cloture | Procedure for ending a debate through a vote by 3/5 of senate |
| veto | Refusal to sign a bill |
| pocket veto | Leaving a bill unsigned until it is too late for it to be "dealt with" |
