Bureaucracy A system of government where decisions are made by no elected state officials
Executive Order A rule or command issued by the president that has the force of law
Cabinet Advisors to the president
Appointment The President's power to name officials to positions like judges and ambassadors
Confirmation The Senate's approval process for presidential nominees to high-level posts
Commander-in-Chief The role of the President as supreme commander of the nation's military forces
Amnesty An official pardon granted to a large group of people who have committed political offenses
Impoundment When the President refuses to spend money appropriated by Congress
Pardon The power to officially forgive a person for a crime, excusing the legal penalty
Executive Privilege The right of the President to withhold info from Congress or the courts
Treaty A formal agreement between 2 or more sovereign states that require Senate ratification
Diplomacy The art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations
Civil Service Permanent, professional branches of government administration, not including the military
Mandate The authority granted to an official, usually through an electoral victory, to act
