Elements of a Story

Fiction- Elements of a Story

TermDefinition
Conflict A struggle or problem a character in a story must overcome.
Character A person, usually in a work of art, novel, movie, or play.
Plot The sequence of events in a story. Each event causes or leads to the next.
Internal Conflict A struggle within the mind of a character.
Setting The time and place, or location, in which a literary or dramatic work takes place.
Theme A message about life and human behavior that an author expresses in a text.
Mood The feeling created by the story's tone.
Resolution The final outcome of a story's conflict.
Dialogue The conversation between characters used by writers to develop characters and reveal aspects of their personality.
