| yurt | a tentlike house used by the nomadic people of the Chinese steepes |
| trade route | a way across land or sea that is traveled by merchants |
| yak | an oxlike animal that lives in Asia |
| cultural diffusion | the spread of goods and ideas from one group of people to another |
| hemp | a type of plant, the fibers of which are used to make such things as rope, fabric, and paper |
| porcelain | a type of strong ceramic pottery |
| celadon | a potter glaze that varies from green to blue |
| dyansty | a series of leaders or rulers who all come from the same family |
| mandate of heaven | a belief that the ruler had heaven's blessing and carried out its wishes |
| silk | a very soft, smooth, and shiny natural fiber that is made by caterpillars called silkworms and used to make clothing |
| Great Silk Road | trade route used by merchants to sell China's highly valued silk to other cultures |
