Vitalism The theory that life is a product of a supernatural force.
Mechanism The theory that life is a product of chemical and physical forces
Hypothesis An Educated guess addressing the problem
Natural law The natural limits to the universe
Descent with Modification Refers to the fact that the offspring are different from their parents
Natural Selection Any change in the environment that allows the survival on one trait and the elimination of another within a species
Speciation The evolutionary process if a new species formation
Allopatric Speciation The formation of a new species in which the parent or original species does not continue to coexist alongside the new species
Sympatric Speciation The formation of a new species in which the parent or original species does continue to coexist alongside the new species
Biological Species Any group of organisms capable of producing fertile offspring
Macroevolution The evolutionary process of new species formation
Microevolution The change in characteristics or evolutionary changes within a species
Prezygotic Isolation Natural mechanisms that prevent the formation of a zygote formed by the egg and cells of different species
Postzygotic isolation Natural mechanisms that prevent the survival of a zygote formed by the egg and sperm cells of different species
Cell The smallest unit displaying all the characteristics of being alive
Cell theory the theory that all living things are composed of cells
Cell Wall A layer of cellulose surrounding a plant cell membrane that functions to provide support against the osmotic pressure within a plant cell
Vacuole A temporary storage organelle within a cell
Cytoplasm All materials found within the cell. Includes the liquid cytosol
Eukaryotic Cell Cells with extensive compartmentalization and organelle structures. Eukaryotic cells include all cells except bacteria.
Prokaryotic cell all cells that have minimal compartmentalization and few structural organelles and includes only the bacteria
Endoplasmic Reticulum An organelle composed of membrane tubes as function to receive process and distribute proteins to the Golgi
Gene A sequence of nucleotides found in the DNA of a cell that codes for a specific protein
Lysosome A membrane bound organelle that contains digestive enzymes that function primarily for the breakdown if molecules or tissues
Mitochondria The organelle that converts the energy of sugar to the energy of ATP
Nucleus Organelle that contains the DNA of a cell
Plasma Membrane Also known as the cell membrane and forms the outer boundary of the cell
Ribosome The organelle that produces proteins
