Term 2 Blood Cells
Composition of blood, Red, White Blood Cells and platelets, Blood Clotting.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is blood made of? | 55% Plasma <1% of leukocyte and platelets 45% Erythrocytes |
| What is Plasma? | Its the liquid matrix of the blood Made up of 92% water Has electrolytes Nutrients: Glucose. Lipids and Amino Acids Blood Gases Hormones |
| What are Red blood cells? | They are called erythrocytes Biconcave disc shape Has no nucleus only lives for 120 days New cells are made in the bone marrow and are destroyed in the liver Transports oxygen Contains a red pigment called hemoglobin 1 mm3 of blood contains 5m cells |
| What are White blood cells? | They are called leukocytes They work to destroy invaders like bacteria or viruses |
| What is a phagocytes cell? | These move like amoeba, they can move through capillary walls to sites of infection. They are formed in the bone marrow Phagocytes ingulf bacteria and viruses at the site. |
| What are Lymphocytes cells? | These produce antibodies that kill pathogens by causing them to clump together or neutralize them with their toxins. These are formed in the lymph nodes or the spleen |
| What are platelets? | They are cells fragments, which have no nucleus like blood cells. They are also formed in the bone marrow. Platelets/Thrombocytes help to clot blood to prevent hemorrhaging |
| Why does the blood clot? | The blood clots to prevent excessive bleeding and prevents foreign invaders from infecting the blood and causing other diseases. |
| How is a blood clot formed? | First you must get a cut Second vasoconstriction will happen this is when the feeling or stimulus of the cut will make the walls construct squeeze up themselves. When this happen it cause less blood to flow through the cut wound. |
| How is a blood clot formed? | The Platelets them will stick to the edges of the wound while the other platelets will stick to each other. This will reduce bleeding |
| What is the blood clotting process? | Prothrombin and Fibrinogen are soluble proteins dissolved in blood plasma. These tissues produce a chemical called thromboplastin The thromboplastin converts the inactive protein to active proteins. |
| Continue | Thrombin acts as fibrinogen, and converts the protein to fibrin which is insoluble and wont dissolve over the would these are basically threads that formed the scab we pick off. So these hold the platelets together and form the clot. |
