Metamorphic Rocks

QuestionAnswer
What is foliation? Crystals rearrange into layers or planes (result of pressure)
What is an index mineral? Formed at specific pressures and temperatures
What are the three factors that can create metamorphism? Temperature, Pressure, Interactions with Fluid
How does heat, pressure, and metamorphic grade relate? Higher Heat + Higher Pressure = Higher Metamorphic Grade
What is a metamorphic grade? Intensity of metamorphism/amount of change
What do crystal sizes mean for a metamorphic grade? Bigger Crystal Size = Higher Grade
What do minerals and textures do with metamorphic grade? New minerals are likely to form and new textures are likely to develop
What are the three types of pressure? Confining, Compression, Shear Stress
What is confining pressure? Pressure applied equally on all surfaces SO shape stays the same but SHRINKS
What is compression pressure? Directed pressure that causes flattening More force in one way
What is shear stress pressure? Force applied parallel to the object Like spreading a deck of cards by sliding the top card
Pressure causes what three things? Plastic Deformation, Recrystallization of minerals, and Foliation
What is Plastic Deformation? Folding and stretching of rock slowly over time
Pressure and temperature causes what? PHASE CHANGE and mineral stability
What do interactions with fluid cause? Neo-crystallization: form new minerals
What is contact metamorphism? Increase in temperature in contact with heat, pressure not as important
Where does contact metamorphism occur? Next to igneous intrusion (magma)
What metamorphic grade does contact metamorphism have? Low grade
What is regional metamorphism? High pressures and temperatures over large areas
What metamorphic grade does regional metamorphism have? High grade
What are accretionary prisms? Type of metamorphism
What temperature occurs with accretionary prisms? Low
What pressure occurs with accretionary prisms? High
What rock is found at accretionary prisms? Blueschists
Which type of metamorphism has high heat but pressure isn't important? Contact Metamorphism
Which type of metamorphism has high heat and pressure? Regional Metamorphism
Which type of metamorphism has low heat and high pressure? Accretionary Prisms
What is a protolith? Parent rock (prior to metamorphism)
Where are accretionary prisms found? Subduction Zones
Where are regional metamorphisms found? Convergent plate boundaries Formation of mountain ranges

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
