NHA Test Question

Role of a Phlebotomist

TermDefinition
Specimen Collection Primarily blood samples, using venipuncture, finger pricks, or heel pricks for infants. Sometimes nonblood specimens
Safety and Sanitation Proper hand hygiene, wearing appropriate PPE and safely disposing of used needles and other materials.
Labeling and Processing After collecting blood, phlebotomists are responsible for accurately labeling the samples, stored and transferred correctly to the lab.
Record Keeping Time of collection, identify the collector, and any issues or reactions during the procedure
Equipment Maintenance maintain lab equipment and ensuring that all supplies are available and in good working order
Quality Control Ensuring that the blood samples are not contaminated or compromised which could affect the results.
Collaboration w/ other health care professionals They do this to ensure the blood samples are accurately recorded in the patient's medical record.
Patient interaction Explain the procedure, help them feel at ease, and answer any questions. Identify any potential issues that could complicate the blood draw. (fainting, fear of needles)
Patient Education Provide Patients with instructions for post draw care or for preparing for a certain type of blood test that require fasting or other special conditions
