Canon A rule or model that artists followed to create perfect and balanced sculptures.
Pediment The triangular top part of a Greek temple.
Orders Styles of Greek columns (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian).
Myths Traditional stories about gods and heroes that explain nature and life.
Mount Olympus The highest mountain in Greece and the home of the Greek gods.
Alexander the Great A king of Macedonia who created a huge empire and spread Greek culture.
Pericles An important Athenian leader who strengthened democracy and improved Athens.
Hellas The name the ancient Greeks used for Greece.
Polis A Greek city with its own government and laws.
City-states Small independent cities with their own rulers and armies (like Athens or Sparta).
Oligarchy A government ruled by a small group of powerful people.
Tyrant A ruler who takes power by force and rules alone.
Democracy A system of government where citizens vote and make decisions.
Colonies New cities created by Greeks in other lands.
Metropolis The “mother city” that founded a colony.
Persians People from the Persian Empire who fought against the Greeks.
Darius I A king of the Persian Empire who tried to conquer Greece.
Battle of Marathon A battle (490 BC) where Athens defeated the Persians.
Battle of Thermopylae A battle (480 BC) where a small Greek army, including Spartans, fought bravely against the Persians.
Battle of Salamis and Plataea Two important battles (480–479 BC) where the Greeks finally defeated the Persians.
Athenian Citizens A free adult man born in Athens who could vote and participate in politics.
Ekklesia The main assembly in Athens where citizens met and voted.
Boule (Council of 500) A group of 500 citizens who prepared laws for the assembly.
Magistrates Officials chosen to carry out laws and manage the city.
Strategoi Military generals in Athens.
Archons Important leaders or chief officials in Athens.
Heliaia A large people’s court in Athens.
Delian League An alliance of Greek city-states led by Athens to defend against the Persians.
