Theological Determinism The belief that an omniscient or omnipotent deity determines all events in the universe.
Scientific Determinism The belief that natural laws and physical causes determine all events.
Argument from Omniscience If God knows the future, then the future is fixed and humans cannot choose otherwise.
Argument from Omnipotence If God planned all events, then human actions are part of a divine plan and not freely chosen.
Divine Plan The idea that every event is consciously set in motion by an omnipotent deity.
Linear Time in Omniscience The belief that past, present, and future are all known to God simultaneously.
Omniscience The attribute of knowing all things, including future events.
Omnipotence The attribute of having unlimited power, including determining all events.
Theological Determinism and Free Will If God determines all events, human free will becomes questionable.
Scientific Determinism and Free Will If natural laws determine all events, human choices may be predetermined.
Nomological Determinism Another term for scientific determinism, based on the laws of nature.
Causal Determinism The idea that every event has a cause that makes it inevitable.
Predictability in Science Scientific determinism assumes that natural laws allow prediction of future events.
Physical Laws Rules of nature that govern all physical processes and events.
External Causes Factors outside the individual that determine actions and events.
Determinism vs. Chance Determinism denies randomness; all events follow causal laws.
Determinism vs. Freedom Determinism implies lack of true choice; freedom implies independent control.
Hard Determinism and Theology Hard determinists argue that divine control eliminates free will.
Soft Determinism and Theology Soft determinists argue that divine influence and human choice can coexist.
Scientific Determinism Example Predicting planetary motion using physical laws.
Theological Determinism Example Belief that God predetermined all human actions.
Determinism and Moral Responsibility If actions are predetermined, assigning moral blame becomes difficult.
Determinism in Philosophy A major position in metaphysics concerning the nature of human action.
