Freedom The power of a sentient being to exercise its will toward a desired goal.
Choice The presence of valid options available to a person.
Will The capacity of a person to make a choice among available options.
Free Will The ability to choose regardless of external constraints or pressures.
Agency The capacity to act on one’s will and translate choices into actions.
Freedom as Goal-Oriented Action Freedom involves directing thoughts and efforts toward achieving a desired outcome.
Freedom Requires Options A person cannot exercise freedom without having choices.
Freedom Requires Will Freedom involves deciding which option to take.
Freedom Requires Agency Freedom is incomplete unless choices are acted upon.
Example of Choice Choosing to eat, sleep, or go to school demonstrates the presence of options.
Example of Will Deciding which course of action to take shows the use of will.
Example of Free Will Choosing to wear revealing clothes despite conservative parents.
Example of Agency Acting on a decision, such as going to school after choosing to do so.
Freedom vs. Will Freedom is the power to act; will is the decision-making capacity.
Freedom vs. Choice Choice is the availability of options; freedom is the ability to pursue them.
Freedom vs. Free Will Free will emphasizes independence from external constraints.
Freedom vs. Agency Agency is the execution of choices; freedom includes the whole process.
Sentient Being A being capable of conscious experience and intentional action.
Freedom as Human Capacity Humans exercise freedom through conscious decision-making.
Freedom as Responsibility Freedom implies accountability for the consequences of one’s choices.
