Fraction Vocabulary
Key terms that are important in the fraction unit
| Term | Definition |

| Fraction | A number that represents part of a whole |
| Numerator | The number that is above the fraction bar that shows how many parts are being counted |
| Denominator | The number that is below the fraction bar that shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into |
| Proper | A fraction where the number in the denominator is greater than the number in the numerator |
| Improper | A fraction where the number in the numerator is greater than or equal to the number in the denominator |
| Mixed Number | A number made up of a whole number and a proper fraction |
| Equivalent Fractions | Two or more fractions of the same value |
| Unit Fraction | A fraction that has a numerator of 1 |
| Common Denominator | A shared denominator between two or more fractions, needed when adding or subtracting fractions |
| Reciprocal | A fraction turned upside down by switching the numerator and denominator |
| Ratio | A comparison of two quantities using division |
| Simplify | To rewrite a fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number |
| Fraction Bar | The horizontal line that divides the numerator from the denominator |
