What is an autotroph? An organism that produces its own food using sunlight.
What is a heterotroph? An organism that must obtain food from external sources.
What is photosynthesis? Production of glucose using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water.
What is root absorption? Uptake of water and minerals from soil.
What is transport in plants? Movement of water and nutrients through xylem and phloem.
What is assimilation in plants? Use of nutrients for growth, reproduction, and defense.
What are the main functions of soil? Support, water reservoir, nutrient reservoir, mineral absorption, cation exchange, pH regulation, microbial activity, decomposition.
What are macronutrients? Elements needed in large amounts: C, O, H, N, K, Ca, Mg, P, S.
What are micronutrients? Elements needed in small amounts: Cl, Fe, Mn, Zn, B, Cu, Mo.
What is the function of nitrogen in plants? Component of amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids, and chlorophyll.
What is the function of potassium? Protein synthesis and stomatal operation.
What is the function of calcium? Cell wall structure and membrane stability.
What is the function of magnesium? Component of chlorophyll and enzyme activator.
What is the function of phosphorus? Component of ATP, ADP, nucleic acids, and phospholipids.
What is the function of sulfur? Component of some amino acids and coenzyme A.
What is the function of iron? Needed for chlorophyll synthesis and cytochromes.
What is the function of manganese? Enzyme activator.
What is the function of zinc? Enzyme activator and chlorophyll formation.
What is the function of boron? Carbohydrate transport and nucleic acid synthesis.
What is the function of copper? Component or activator of enzymes.
What is the function of molybdenum? Nitrogen fixation and nitrate reduction.
What are mineral deficiencies? Nutrient shortages causing leaf discoloration or poor growth.
What is hydroponics? Growing plants without soil using nutrient-rich water.
What is Rhizobium? Nitrogen-fixing bacteria in legume root nodules.
What are mycorrhizae? Fungi that enhance nutrient uptake, especially phosphate.
Why are carnivorous plants carnivorous? They grow in nitrogen-poor soils.
What adaptations do carnivorous plants have? Modified leaves for trapping and digesting prey.
What are examples of carnivorous plants? Pitcher plants, Venus flytrap, sundew.
What are parasitic plants? Plants that tap into host vascular tissue for nutrients.
What are examples of parasitic plants? Dodder and Indian pipe.
What is the digestive system? Organs that ingest food, break it down, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste.
