Protein Synthesis
RNA and Protein Synthesis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| mRNA (messenger) | Carries instructions from DNA to the ribosome for making a protein. |
| tRNA (transfer) | Brings the correct amino acids to the ribosome during protein building. |
| rRNA (ribosomal) | Makes up the ribosome, where proteins are put together. |
| protein synthesis | The process of making proteins using the instructions in DNA. |
| transcription | The step where DNA is copied into mRNA; occurs in the nucleus. |
| translation | The step where the ribosome reads mRNA to build a protein; occurs in the cytoplasm. |
| codon | A group of three bases on mRNA that codes for an amino acid. |
| anticodon | A group of three bases on tRNA that matches a codon on mRNA. |
| amino acid | A small molecule that links together to make a protein. |
| protein | A molecule made of amino acids that helps the body function and gives structure. |
| RNA differences | Single stranded, contains U (uracil), sugar ribose |
| ribosome | The organelle (cell part) where proteins are made. |
