Protein Synthesis

RNA and Protein Synthesis

TermDefinition
mRNA (messenger) Carries instructions from DNA to the ribosome for making a protein.
tRNA (transfer) Brings the correct amino acids to the ribosome during protein building.
rRNA (ribosomal) Makes up the ribosome, where proteins are put together.
protein synthesis The process of making proteins using the instructions in DNA.
transcription The step where DNA is copied into mRNA; occurs in the nucleus.
translation The step where the ribosome reads mRNA to build a protein; occurs in the cytoplasm.
codon A group of three bases on mRNA that codes for an amino acid.
anticodon A group of three bases on tRNA that matches a codon on mRNA.
amino acid A small molecule that links together to make a protein.
protein A molecule made of amino acids that helps the body function and gives structure.
RNA differences Single stranded, contains U (uracil), sugar ribose
ribosome The organelle (cell part) where proteins are made.
