Alzheimer’s causes a loss of gray matter in the cerebrum.
Axons transmit signals
Blood-brain barrier a layer of epithelial cells that prevents cells and large proteins from entering the brain.
Concussion a brain injury caused by a blow to the head
Dendrites receive incoming signals from other neurons.
Gray matter Neuron cell bodies and dendrites. Processing occurs here.
Gyri raised ridges that cover the cerebrum
Interneuron transmits impulses between neurons.
Meninges layers of connective tissue covering the brain.
Motor neuron triggers muscle movement.
Myelin a white mixture of proteins and phospholipids that coats most axons
Neuroglia makes up all nervous system structures
Neuron communicates with other cells and contains all of its organelles
Neurotransmitters binds to receptors on the target cell, activating it.
Reflexes rapid, involuntary movements that result from a nerve pathway called a reflex arc that bypasses the brain.
Stroke an event that disrupts blood flow to part of the brain.
Sulci grooves that cover the cerebrum
Synapse The space between a neuron axon and its target cell
White matter Myelinated axons. Transmission occurs here.
