Wind

TermDefinition
Wind the movement of air from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure, caused by the unequal heating of Earth’s surface by the Sun
Coriolis Effect the apparent bending or deflection of moving air (and water) caused by the rotation of the Earth
Local Winds winds that blow over short distances and are caused by the unequal heating of Earth’s surface within a small area ex. sea breeze and land breeze
Global winds large-scale wind systems that move air around the entire Earth ex. polar easterlies, prevailing westerlies, and trade winds
Sea Breeze a local wind that blows from the ocean toward the land during the day.
Land Breeze a local wind that blows from the land toward the ocean, usually at night.
Polar Easterlies cold global winds that blow from east to west near the North and South Poles (60 - 90 degrees latitude)
Prevailing Westerlies global winds that blow from west to east in the middle latitudes.
Trade Winds global winds that blow from east to west toward the equator.
high-pressure system an area where the air pressure is higher than the surrounding areas. It forms when cool, dense air sinks toward Earth’s surface.
Low Pressure an area where the air pressure is lower than the surrounding areas. It forms when warm air rises, creating a space that the surrounding air moves into.
