fertilization The process in which sperm and egg combine to form a new organism.
external fertilization Fertilization that occurs outside the body, usually in water.
internal fertilization Fertilization that occurs inside the female reproductive tract.
fission A form of asexual reproduction where one organism splits into two similar individuals.
stem cells Undifferentiated cells capable of developing into specialized cell types.
genetic diversity Differences in DNA among individuals that increase a population’s adaptability.
mutation A change in DNA that can create new traits or variations.
natural selection The process where organisms with advantageous traits survive and reproduce more successfully.
chromosomes Structures made of DNA that carry genetic information.
sex determination The biological system that decides whether an organism develops as male, female, or both.
environmental sex determination A system where environmental factors (like temperature) determine sex.
sexual differentiation The development of physical and biological traits associated with sex.
hermaphrodite An organism with both male and female reproductive organs.
simultaneous hermaphrodite An organism that has functioning male and female systems at the same time.
sequential hermaphrodite An organism that changes sex during its lifetime.
mate A partner with which an organism reproduces sexually.
reproductive cells Specialized cells (sperm and egg) used in sexual reproduction.
invertebrate An animal without a backbone.
vertebrate An animal with a backbone.
chromosome duplication The copying of chromosomes during the cell cycle; also called endoreplication.
