reproduction The biological process by which organisms produce new individuals.
egg A reproductive cell that develops into a new organism after fertilization or parthenogenesis.
asexual A type of reproduction involving only one parent and producing identical offspring.
clone An organism genetically identical to its single parent in asexual reproduction.
oviparous Animals that lay eggs which develop and hatch outside the mother's body.
viviparous Animals that give birth to live young that develop inside the mother's body.
ovoviviparous Animals whose eggs develop inside the mother and hatch internally before birth.
organism Any living thing capable of growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli.
asexual reproduction Reproduction involving one parent producing genetically identical offspring.
binary fission A form of asexual reproduction where one parent cell divides into two identical cells.
budding Asexual reproduction where a new organism grows from the parent’s body.
regeneration The ability to regrow lost body parts; in some animals, it produces new individuals.
fragmentation Asexual reproduction where an organism breaks into pieces, each forming a new individual.
parthenogenesis Asexual reproduction where offspring develop from unfertilized eggs.
amoeba A single-celled organism that reproduces by binary fission.
budding Asexual reproduction where a small growth develops into a new organism.
offspring The new individual produced by reproduction.
parent organism The original organism that produces offspring.
genetic variation Differences in DNA among individuals; not produced in asexual reproduction.
paramecium A single-celled organism that reproduces by binary fission.
hydra A simple animal that reproduces asexually through budding.
sponge A simple aquatic animal capable of budding and regeneration.
wasp An insect capable of parthenogenesis in some species.
starfish An animal capable of regeneration and fragmentation.
aphid An insect that can reproduce by parthenogenesis.
bee An insect where males can develop from unfertilized eggs (parthenogenesis).
lizard A reptile in which some species can reproduce by parthenogenesis.
coral A marine organism that can reproduce asexually by budding or fragmentation.
planaria A flatworm capable of regeneration and fragmentation.
