Cardiac Related to the heart.
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Arterioles Small branches of arteries that lead to capillaries.
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels where oxygen, nutrients, and waste are exchanged with tissues.
Venules Small vessels that collect blood from capillaries and carry it to veins.
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Valves Flaps inside veins
Histology The study of tissues under a microscope.
Tunica Externa The outer layer of a blood vessel
Tunica Interna The inner lining of the blood vessel
Lumen The hollow space inside a blood vessel where blood flows.
Pulmonary Circulation Blood flow from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart to pick up oxygen.
Systemic Circulation Blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body and back.
Right Atrium Upper right chamber; receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between the right atrium and right ventricle
Right Ventricle Pumps blood to the lungs
Pulmonary Semilunar (Pulmonic) Valve Valve between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Pulmonary Artery Carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Carry oxygenated blood from lungs to the left atrium.
Left Atrium Receives oxygenated blood from lungs.
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve Valve between left atrium and left ventricle.
Left Ventricle Pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Aortic Semilunar (Aortic) Valve Valve between left ventricle and aorta.
Aorta Largest artery; carries blood to the body.
Chordae Tendineae “Heart strings” that hold valves in place.
Septum Wall dividing the left and right sides of the heart.
Trabeculae Carneae Ridges inside the ventricles.
Papillary Muscles Muscles that anchor the chordae tendineae.
Apex Bottom tip of the heart.
Base Top portion of the heart.
Left Coronary Artery Main artery supplying the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery Supplies the front of the heart.
Circumflex Artery Supplies the side and back of the left heart.
Right Coronary Artery Supplies the right side of the heart.
Carotid Artery Supplies blood to the brain and head.
Descending Aorta Portion of the aorta that travels downward through the chest and abdomen.
Subclavian Artery Supplies blood to the arms.
Brachiocephalic Trunk Branch of the aorta that supplies the right arm and right side of head.
Axillary Artery Artery in the armpit region.
Brachial Artery Major artery of the upper arm.
Radial Artery Artery on the thumb side of the forearm.
Ulnar Artery Artery on the pinky side of the forearm.
Iliac Artery Supplies blood to the pelvis and legs.
Femoral Artery Major artery of the thigh.
Popliteal Artery Located behind the knee.
Dorsalis Pedis Artery on the top of the foot.
Posterior Tibial Artery behind the ankle.
Jugular Vein Drains blood from the head and neck.
Brachiocephalic Vein Formed by jugular and subclavian veins; drains into superior vena cava.
Subclavian Vein Drains blood from the arm.
Axillary Vein Vein in the armpit region.
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on the thumb side of arm.
Median Cubital Vein Vein in the elbow commonly used for blood draws.
Basilic Vein Superficial vein on the pinky side of arm.
Iliac Vein Drains blood from pelvis and legs.
Femoral Vein Major vein of the thigh.
Popliteal Vein Vein behind the knee.
Greater Saphenous Vein Long superficial vein running along the leg.
