TermDefinition
binomial distribution a type of probability distribution that shows the probabilities of the outcomes of a binomial experiment
binomial experiment an experiment in which there are fixed numbers of independent trials, exactly two possible outcomes for each trial, and the probability of success is the same for each trial
combination selections of objects in which order is not important
compound event the union or intersection of two events
conditional probability the probability that event B occurs, given that event A occurred; written at P(B|A)
conditional relative frequency the ratio of a joint relative frequency to the marginal relative frequency
dependent events two events in which the occurrence of one event does affect the occurrence of the other event
disjoint/mutually exclusive events two events that have no outcomes in common
event a collection of one or more outcomes
experimental probability the ratio of the number of successes, or favorable outcomes, to the number of trials in a probability experiment
Fundamental Counting Principal a way to find the total number of possible outcomes
geometric probability a probability found by calculating a ratio of two lengths, areas, or volumes
independent events two events in which the occurrence of one event does not affect the occurrence of another event
joint frequency each entry in a two-way table
joint relative frequency the ratio of a frequency that is not in the "total" row or the "total" column to the total number of values or observations
marginal frequency the sums of the rows and columns in a two-way table
marginal relative frequency the sum of the joint relative frequencies in a row or a column
n factorial the product of the integers from 1 to 'n', for any positive integer 'n'
outcome the possible results of an experiment
overlapping events two events that have one or more outcomes in common
permutation an arrangement of objects in which order is important
probability distribution a function that gives the probability of each possible value of a random variable
probability experiment an action, or trial, that has varying results
probability of an event a measure of the likelihood, or chance, that an event will occur
random variable a variable whose value is determined by the outcomes of a probability experiment
sample space the set of all possible outcomes for an experiment
simulation the use of a model to reproduce the conditions of a situation or process so that the simulated outcomes closely math the real-world outcomes
theoretical probability the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of outcomes when all outcomes are equally likely
two-way table a frequency table that displays data collection from one source that belong to two different categories

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
