Arterioles Smaller arteries that lead into capillaries
Capillaries smallest blood vessels where exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and wastes
Venules Smaller veins that get blood from capillaries and start returning it to heart
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart
Valves Flaps of tissue inside veins and the heart that prevent blood from flowing backward
Tunica Externa outermost layer of a blood vessel; protects and supports
Tunica Media middle layer of blood vessel; constrict and dilate
Tunica Interna innermost layer of blood vessel; smooth surface for blood flow
Lumen open interior space inside a blood vessel
Pulmonary Circulation circulation of blood between the heart and lungs; oxygenate the blood
Systemic Circulation circulation of blood between the heart and the rest of the body; deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues
Right Atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body
Tricuspid Valve Valve between the right atrium and right ventricle
Right Ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Pulmonary Semilunar/Pulmonic Valve Valve between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery
Pulmonary Artery Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
Pulmonary Veins Carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
Left Atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve Valve between the left atrium and left ventricle
Left Ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the body
Aortic Semilunar/Aortic Valve Valve between the left ventricle and the aorta
Aorta largest artery in the body
Chordae Tendineae fibrous cords connecting valves to papillary muscles that prevent valve prolapse
Septum divids the right and left sides of the heart
Trabeculae Carneae Irregular muscle ridges inside the ventricles
Papillary Muscles anchor the chordae tendineae and stabilize valves during contraction
Apex pointed bottom tip of the heart
Base broad upper part of the heart
Left Coronary Artery (Left Main) supplies oxygenated blood to the left side of the heart
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery Supplies the front of the heart and the left ventricle
Circumflex Artery supplies the lateral and posterior heart
Right Coronary Artery Supplies the right side of the heart
Carotid Artery supply blood to the brain and head
Descending Aorta travels downward through the chest and abdomen
Arteries of the Upper Limb
Subclavian Artery Supplies blood to the arms and shoulders
Brachiocephalic Trunk supplies the right arm and right side of the head and neck
Axillary Artery supplies the shoulder and upper arm
Brachial Artery Major artery of the upper arm
Radial Artery Artery on the thumb side of the forearm
Ulnar Artery Artery on the pinky side of the forearm
Iliac Artery Branches from the aorta that supply the pelvis and legs
Femoral Artery Major artery of the thigh
Popliteal Artery Located behind the knee
Dorsalis Pedis (DP) Artery on the top of the foot
Posterior Tibial (PT) Artery located behind the medial ankle
Jugular Vein drain blood from the head and brain
Brachiocephalic Vein subclavian and jugular veins, returning blood to the superior vena cava
Subclavian Vein Drains blood from the upper limbs back toward the heart
Axillary Vein Drains blood from the shoulder and upper arm
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on the lateral side of the arm
Median Cubital Vein Vein in the front of the elbow
Basilic Vein Superficial vein on the medial side of the arm
Iliac Vein Drains blood from the legs and pelvis into the inferior vena cava
