Cardiac

TermDefinition
Cardiac Relating to the heart.
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Arterioles Small branches of arteries that lead to capillaries.
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels where oxygen, nutrients, and waste are exchanged between blood and tissues.
Venules Small vessels that collect blood from capillaries and lead to veins.
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Valves Flaps inside the heart and veins that prevent blood from flowing backward.
Histology The study of tissues under a microscope
Tunica Externa The outer layer of a blood vessel (protective layer).
Tunica Media The middle layer of a blood vessel; made mostly of smooth muscle.
Tunica Interna (Intima) The innermost layer of a blood vessel; smooth lining that touches blood.
Lumen The hollow inside space of a blood vessel where blood flows.
Pulmonary Circulation Blood flow between the heart and lungs
Systemic Circulation Blood flow between the heart and the rest of the body.
Right Atrium Upper right chamber; receives oxygen-poor blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between right atrium and right ventricle.
Right Ventricle Pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Semilunar (Pulmonic) Valve Valve between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Pulmonary Artery Carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Carry oxygen-rich blood from lungs to heart.
Left Atrium Receives oxygen-rich blood from lungs.
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve Valve between left atrium and left ventricle.
Left Ventricle Pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body (strongest chamber).
Aortic Semilunar (Aortic) Valve Valve between left ventricle and aorta.
Aorta Largest artery; carries oxygen-rich blood to the body.
Chordae Tendineae String-like cords that anchor heart valves.
Septum Wall dividing right and left sides of the heart.
Trabeculae Carneae Ridged muscle inside ventricles.
Papillary Muscles Muscles that hold chordae tendineae and prevent valve prolapse.
Apex Pointed bottom tip of the heart.
Base Broad upper part of the heart.
Left Coronary Artery (Left Main) Main artery supplying left side of heart.
Left Anterior Descending (LAD) Supplies front of left ventricle.
Circumflex Artery Supplies side and back of left ventricle.
Right Coronary Artery (RCA) Supplies right side of heart.
Carotid Artery Supplies blood to the brain and head.
Descending Aorta Portion of aorta that travels downward through chest and abdomen.
Subclavian Artery Supplies blood to arms.
Brachiocephalic Trunk First branch of aortic arch (right side).
Axillary Artery Main artery of the armpit.
Brachial Artery Main artery of upper arm.
Radial Artery Artery on thumb side of forearm (used to check pulse).
Ulnar Artery Artery on pinky side of forearm.
Iliac Artery Branch of aorta supplying pelvis and legs.
Femoral Artery Main artery of the thigh.
Popliteal Artery Behind the knee.
Dorsalis Pedis (DP) Artery on top of foot.
Posterior Tibial (PT) Artery behind the ankle.
Jugular Vein Drains blood from head and neck.
Brachiocephalic Vein Drains blood from head, neck, and arms into superior vena cava.
Subclavian Vein Drains arm blood.
Axillary Vein Drains blood from armpit area.
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on thumb side of arm.
Median Cubital Vein Vein in elbow crease (common blood draw site).
Basilic Vein Superficial vein on pinky side of arm.
Iliac Vein Drains pelvis and legs.
Femoral Vein Drains thigh.
Popliteal Vein Behind the knee.
Greater Saphenous Vein Longest vein in the body; runs along inner leg.
