Waves

QuestionAnswer
Wave Disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter.
Mechanical wave A wave that travels only through matter.
Medium A material in which a wave travels is called a medium.
Transverse wave A wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels.
Longitudinal wave Causes the particles in a medium to move parallel to the direction that the wave travels.
Sound wave A longitudinal wave that can travel only through matter.
Amplify To increase the volume of sound.
Wavelength The distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave.
Frequency The rate at which something occurs or is repeated over a particular period of time or in a given sample.
Pitch The quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it; the degree of highness or lowness of a tone.
