6th Grade Math C10

QuestionAnswer
box-and whisker plot a graph that shows the variability of a data set along a number line using the least value, the greatest value, and the quartiles of the data
event a collection of one or more outcomes
experiment an investigation or a procedure that has varying results
favorable outcomes the outcomes of a specific event
first quartile the median of the lower half of a data set; written as Q sub 1
five-number summary the five numbers that make up a box-and-whisker plot
Fundamental Counting Principle a way to find the total number of possible outcomes
interquartile range a measure of variation for a data set, which is the difference of the third quartile and the first quartile
mean the sum of the data divided by the number of data values
measure of center a measure that describes the typical value of a data set
measure of variation a measure that describes the spread, or distribution, of a data set
median for a data set with an odd number of ordered values, it is the middle value. For a data set with an even number for ordered values, it is the mean of the two middle values
mode the data value or values that occur most often; data can have one or more than one, or none
outcomes the possible results of an experiment
probability a measure of the likelihood, or chance, that an even will occur
quartiles values of a box-and-whisker plot that divide a data set into four equal parts
range the difference of the greatest value and the least value of a data set
relative frequency the fraction or percent of the time that the event occurs
sample space the set of all possible outcomes for an experiment
statistical question a question for which you do not expect to get a single answer; you expect a variety of answers, and you are interested in the distribution and tendency of those answers
statistics the science of collection, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data
third quartile the median of the upper half of a data set; written as Q sub 3
compound event an event consisting two or more events
