| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| dependent variable | the variable that represents the output values of a function |
| equation | a mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign, =, to show that two expressions are equal |
| equation in two variable | an equation that represents two quantities that change in relationship to one another |
| graph of an inequality | a graph that shows all the solutions of an inequality on a number line |
| independent variable | the variable that represents the input values of a function |
| inequality | a mathematical sentence that compares expressions; it contains the symbols <, >, greater than/equal, less than/equal |
| inverse operations | operations that "undo" each other, such as addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division |
| solution of an equation in two variables | an ordered pair (x, y) that makes an equation true |
| solution | a value that makes an equation true |
| solution of an inequality | a value that makes an inequality true |
| solution set | the set of all solutions of an inequality |
| adjacent angles | two angles that share a common side and have the same vertex |
| complementary angles | two angles whose sum is 90 degrees |
| congruent angles | angles that have the same measure |
| congruent sides | sides that have the same length |
| supplementary angles | two angles whose sum equals 180 degrees |
| vertical angles | opposite angles formed by the intersection of two lines |
| angle of rotation | the number of degrees a figure rotates |
| center of rotation | the point around which a figure is rotated |
| congruent figures | figures that have the same size and the same shape |
| corresponding angles | matching angles of two congruent figures |
| corresponding sides | matching sides of two congruent figures |
| image | the new figure produced when a figure is transformed |
| line of reflection | a line in which a transformed figure is reflected |
| line of symmetry | a line that divides a figure into two parts that are mirror images of each other |
| reflection | a transformation that flips a graph over a line called the line of reflection |
| rotation | a turn; a transformation in which a figure is rotated around a point |
| transformation | a change in the size, shape, position, or orientation of a graph |
| translation | a transformation that shifts a graph horizontally and/or vertically, but does not change its size, shape, or orientation |
