Forces and motion

TermDefinition
Acceleration It is a measurement of the change in speed over a period of time.
Force It is a push or pull on an object.
Contact Force It is a push or pull of one object on another upon contact.
Newton's Every body remains at rest or moves at a constant velocity in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force.
Law States that the acceleration of an object is equal to the net force exerted on the object divided by the mass of the object.
Friction It is a force that resists the displacement of two surfaces in contact.
Free-Body Diagram It is a simple model for understanding systems of an object with various amounts of forces applied.
Net Force It is the sum of all the forces acting on an object.
Newton's Law States that when one object exerts a force on another, the second object exerts a force of equal magnitude on the first.
Inertia The natural tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion
Reference Point It is the point you choose to describe the location, or position, of an object.
Position It is the distance and direction of an object from a reference point.
Motion It is the process of changing position.
Displacement It is the difference between the initial, or starting, position and the final position.
Velocity It is a measure of the distance an object travels in a given amount of time.
Speed It is the velocity and direction of a moving object.
Vector It is a quantity that has magnitude and direction.
Non-contact force Interactions that act on objects without physical contact, operating through fields (gravitational, electric, or magnetic) across empty space.
Gravity It is a force of attraction that exists between all objects that have mass.
Field It is a region in space that possesses a physical magnitude (for example, a force) at each point.
Weight It is the force of gravity acting on an object.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
