Heart vocab

TermDefinition
Cardiac Relating to the heart.
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart (usually oxygenated, except pulmonary arteries).
Arterioles Small branches of arteries that regulate blood flow into capillaries.
Capillaries Microscopic vessels where oxygen, nutrients, and waste products are exchanged between blood and tissues.
Venules Small vessels that collect blood from capillaries and carry it to veins.
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart (usually deoxygenated, except pulmonary veins).
Valves Flap-like structures that prevent backflow of blood in the heart and veins.
Histology The microscopic study of tissues.
Tunica Externa (Adventitia) The outermost layer of a blood vessel; provides protection and support.
Tunica Media The middle layer of a blood vessel; made mostly of smooth muscle and elastic tissue.
Tunica Interna (Intima) The innermost layer of a blood vessel; smooth lining that contacts blood.
Lumen The inside space of a blood vessel through which blood flows.
Pulmonary Circulation The flow of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart.
Systemic Circulation The flow of blood from the heart to the rest of the body and back.
Right Atrium Upper right chamber; receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between right atrium and right ventricle; prevents backflow into atrium.
Right Ventricle Lower right chamber; pumps blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Semilunar (Pulmonic) Valve Valve between right ventricle and pulmonary artery; prevents backflow.
Pulmonary Artery Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
Left Atrium Upper left chamber; receives oxygenated blood from lungs.
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve Valve between left atrium and left ventricle; prevents backflow.
Left Ventricle Lower left chamber; pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Aortic Semilunar (Aortic) Valve Valve between left ventricle and aorta; prevents backflow.
Aorta Largest artery in the body; carries oxygenated blood to systemic circulation.
Chordae Tendineae String-like cords that anchor AV valves to papillary muscles.
Septum Muscular wall dividing right and left sides of the heart.
Trabeculae Carneae Irregular muscular ridges inside the ventricles
Papillary Muscles Muscles that tighten chordae tendineae to prevent valve prolapse.
Apex Pointed bottom tip of the heart.
Base Broad upper portion of the heart where major vessels attach.
Left Coronary Artery (Left Main) Main artery supplying the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending (LAD) Coronary Artery Supplies the front of the left ventricle and septum.
Circumflex Artery Supplies the lateral and posterior portions of the left ventricle.
Right Coronary Artery (RCA) Supplies the right atrium, right ventricle, and part of the conduction system.
Carotid Artery Supplies blood to the head and brain.
Descending Aorta Portion of the aorta traveling downward through the thorax and abdomen.
Subclavian Artery Supplies blood to the upper limbs; branches from the aorta (left) or brachiocephalic trunk (right).
Brachiocephalic Trunk First branch of the aortic arch; divides into right subclavian and right common carotid arteries.
Axillary Artery Continuation of subclavian artery in the armpit region.
Brachial Artery Main artery of the upper arm.
Radial Artery Artery on the thumb side of the forearm; commonly used for pulse checks.
Ulnar Artery Artery on the pinky side of the forearm.
Iliac Artery Branches from the abdominal aorta to supply pelvis and legs.
Femoral Artery Major artery of the thigh.
Popliteal Artery Located behind the knee.
Dorsalis Pedis (DP) Artery on the top of the foot.
Posterior Tibial (PT) Artery located behind the medial ankle; pulse site.
Jugular Vein Drains blood from the head and neck.
Brachiocephalic Vein Formed by the union of the jugular and subclavian veins; drains into the superior vena cava.
Subclavian Vein Drains blood from the upper limb.
Axillary Vein Drains the axillary region and upper limb.
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on the lateral (thumb) side of the arm.
Median Cubital Vein Connects cephalic and basilic veins; common site for venipuncture.
Basilic Vein Superficial vein on the medial (pinky) side of the arm.
Iliac Vein Drains blood from pelvis and lower limbs into the inferior vena cava.
Femoral Vein Major deep vein of the thigh.
Popliteal Vein Located behind the knee.
Greater Saphenous Vein Long superficial vein running along the medial leg and thigh; commonly used for grafts.
