TermDefinition
Cardiac Related to the heart.
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Arterioles Small branches of arteries that lead to capillaries.
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged with tissues.
Venules Small vessels that collect blood from capillaries and lead to veins.
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Valves Flaps inside the heart and veins that prevent blood from flowing backward.
Histology The study of tissues under a microscope.
Tunica Externa The outer layer of a blood vessel (protection).
Tunica Media The middle muscular layer (controls vessel diameter).
Tunica Interna The inner smooth lining of a blood vessel.
Lumen The hollow space inside a blood vessel where blood flows.
Pulmonary Circulation Blood flow between the heart and lungs (gets oxygen).
Systemic Circulation Blood flow between the heart and the rest of the body.
Right Atrium Upper right chamber; receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between right atrium and right ventricle.
Right Ventricle Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Semilunar (Pulmonic) Valve Valve between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Pulmonary Artery Carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Carry oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium.
Left Atrium Upper left chamber; receives oxygenated blood from lungs.
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve Valve between left atrium and left ventricle.
Left Ventricle Pumps oxygenated blood to the body (strongest chamber).
Aortic Semilunar (Aortic) Valve Valve between left ventricle and aorta.
Aorta Largest artery; carries oxygenated blood to the body.
Chordae Tendineae “Heart strings” that anchor AV valves to papillary muscles.
Septum Wall dividing the left and right sides of the heart.
Trabeculae Carneae Ridged muscle inside the ventricles.
Papillary Muscles Muscles that hold the chordae tendineae and prevent valve collapse.
Apex The pointed bottom tip of the heart.
Base The top portion of the heart.
Left Coronary Artery (Left Main) Main artery supplying the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending (LAD) Supplies the front of the left ventricle.
Circumflex Artery Supplies the side/back of the left ventricle.
Right Coronary Artery (RCA) Supplies the right side of the heart.
Carotid Artery Supplies blood to the brain.
Descending Aorta Carries blood down through chest and abdomen.
Brachiocephalic Trunk First branch of aorta (right side head/arm).
Subclavian Artery Supplies blood to arms.
Axillary Artery Artery in armpit region.
Brachial Artery Main artery of upper arm.
Radial Artery Artery on thumb side of wrist (pulse site).
Ulnar Artery Artery on pinky side of forearm.
Iliac Artery Supplies pelvis and legs.
Femoral Artery Main artery of thigh.
Popliteal Artery Behind the knee.
Dorsalis Pedis (DP) Top of foot.
Posterior Tibial (PT) Behind the ankle.
Brachiocephalic Vein Drains head, neck, and arms to superior vena cava.
Subclavian Vein Drains arm blood.
Axillary Vein Vein in armpit region.
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on thumb side of arm.
Median Cubital Vein Vein in elbow used for blood draws.
Basilic Vein Superficial vein on pinky side of arm.
Iliac Vein Drains pelvis and legs.
Femoral Vein Drains thigh.
Popliteal Vein Behind the knee.
Greater Saphenous Vein Long superficial vein running up the leg.
