| heredity | The passing of traits from parents to offspring |
| trait | A specific characteristic that an organism can pass to its offspring through its genes |
| genetics | The scientific study of heredity. |
| fertilization | The process by which cells release energy by breaking down food molecules without using oxygen |
| purebred | An offspring of many generations that has the same from of a trait |
| allele | The different forms of a gene |
| dominate allele | An allele whose trait always shoes up in the organism when the allele is present |
| recessive allele | An allele that is hidden whenever the dominant allele is present |
| hybird | An offspring of crosses that has two different alleles for a trait |
| probability | A number that describes how likely it is that a particular event will occure |
| Punnet square | A chart that shows all the possible combinations of allele that can result from genetic |
| phenotype | An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits |
| genotype | An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations |
| heterozygous | Having two different alleles for a particular gene. |
| gene | A sequence of DNA that determines a trait and it passed from parent to offspring |
| homozygous | Having two different species and that have been inherited from a common ancestor |
